Why do we need to control rodents ?

The main reasons for control are Disease, Damage and a Legal Requirement.

Disease.  Rats, in particular, carry a wide range of different diseases  ie Rat-bite fever, Weils Disease, Foot and Mouth, and Salmonellas - to name but a few !  Weils Disease (leptospirosis) is probably the biggest threat to human life.  It is carried in the Rats kidneys and is excreted in the urine (although it does not harm the Rat).  Humans can contract the disease by drinking contaminated water or through a cut on the skin.

Damage.  Damage to food stock, raw materials, stored grain, animal feeds etc.  Contamination can occure in various ways, but rodent faeces and urine cause the greatest concern.  Contaminated food has to be destroyed.  Rodents will gnaw pretty much anything, such as wood, concrete, brick, lead/plastic pipes and even electric cables, which can lead to fires.

Legal Requirements.   There are various Acts in place to ensure Rodent Control is undertaken such as 'The Food Hygiene (General) Regulations 1995'.  The Regulations stipulate that all foods that are stored, handled, packaged, transported and displayed are protected against contamination that is likely to render the food unfit for human consumption.  Many buyers will now request details of a Pest Management System from potential and exisiting suppliers.  No raw materuals should be accepted by a buyer if these are known to be contaminated.  The Regulations also stipulate that adequate procedures must be in place to ensure pests are controlled.
